Twin Coast Cycle Trail Tours
Paheke is an historic house (1862) located in the heart of the Bay of Islands area and strategically placed centrally to the Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycleway. Our mission is to provide quality accommodation in a historic setting with all modern comforts and services and in an environmentally friendly facility.
With this as a base, it is possible for guests to explore the natural beauty of land and sea, the mission stations and old buildings of New Zealand’s national birthplace, the ancient sites and fortifications of the Maori, and to engage in a wide variety of activities.
Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail
Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail travels from the historic and beautiful Bay of Islands to the remote and naturally beautiful Hokianga Harbour or vice versa. The temperate climate means that the cycle trail can be ridden all year round. Temperatures range from a high of 30 Celsius in summer to a mild 18 Celsius in mid winter.
The trails total length is 87 km. The trail can be ridden in four shorter sections – starting in the west in Horeke to Okaihau, Okaihua to Kaikohe, Kaikohe to Kawakawa and finally Kawakawa to Opua. The central point is Kaikoke which makes Paheke the perfect place to stay when cycling the trail.
A unique feature of this trail is a series of Pou Pou (carved wooden statues made from local trees) which progressively tell a story along the trail of the landscapes and people of the area. The trail largely follows the northernmost branch rail line which went from the port of Opua through Kawakawa and Kaikohe to the terminus at Okaihau. From there the trail wends through the Utakura Valley to Horeke on the Hokianga Harbour.
We suggest you make Paheke your base for the whole experience and we will make a personal itinerary which includes all dinners & breakfasts, accommodation before during and after the trail, transfers to and from the trail, cycle hire and arrangements/bookings for any of the varied places and activities of the region. You may wish to extend your stay before or after the trail to fully appreciate all the area has to offer and we can guide you to the best.
Paheke partners with two of the most experienced cycle tour and hire companies in the Bay of Islands. We can provide their contact details when you make your accommodation booking.
